Spanner Omni reaches general availability, bringing Google’s distributed SQL database with multi-model support to any infrastructure. Teams can now deploy the same core capabilities—strong consistency, horizontal scale, vector search, graph, and AI integrations—on-premises, across clouds, or on laptops without relying on Google Cloud-managed services.

Core capabilities now available everywhere
Spanner Omni delivers the same distributed SQL foundation as the fully managed Spanner service, combining horizontal scalability with ACID compliance and strong consistency. It extends this foundation into an interoperable multi-model database that supports SQL, graph, key-value, full-text search, vector search, and analytical processing via a columnar engine—all within a single instance. This allows teams to handle diverse workloads without managing multiple specialized systems.
The GA release includes enterprise-grade features required for production workloads: robust security with TLS encryption, authentication, authorization, and audit logging; high-performance backup and restore to protect against data corruption or accidental deletion; and dedicated worker nodes that offload background tasks from primary servers. These worker nodes are stateless compute resources unique to Spanner Omni, designed to improve efficiency for resource-intensive operations.
Licensing is structured to support teams at every stage. The Developer Edition is free for non-production use, includes all core features except backup and worker nodes, and offers a perpetual license for single-server deployments under 4 vCPUs. The Commercial Edition provides full capabilities including backup, worker nodes, and enterprise support, priced via a predictable annual vCPU-based subscription, with discounted proof-of-concept licenses available for pre-production evaluation.
Built for agentic AI and multi-cloud portability
Spanner Omni is engineered to power agentic AI applications by integrating vector search and Spanner Graph directly into the database engine. Teams can store and index vector embeddings alongside relational data, perform KNN and ANN search, and combine semantic similarity with structured SQL filters. Spanner Graph enables property graph storage and traversal, allowing complex entity relationships to be linked with vector search for richer context retrieval.
Model Context Protocol (MCP) support via the open-source MCP Toolbox allows autonomous agents to inspect schemas, retrieve relevant context, and use Spanner Omni as an operational memory layer across multi-cloud deployments. This enables AI agents to maintain state and access structured data consistently, regardless of where the database is running.
Attio, an AI-native CRM company, migrated its agentic application environment to Spanner Omni running on containerized infrastructure. According to co-founder and CTO Alexander Christie, this move accelerated production velocity by providing consistent Spanner capabilities across environments, enabling mission-critical workflows like Spanner queues to run at scale with confidence.
Trade-offs vs. fully managed Spanner
As self-managed software, Spanner Omni shifts operational responsibility to the user, including routine maintenance, version upgrades, and infrastructure monitoring. Google does not provide availability SLAs for customer-managed deployments, though following recommended reference architectures can help achieve high availability comparable to the managed service.
To ensure portability, Spanner Omni excludes capabilities that depend on Google Cloud-specific services, such as native integrations with BigQuery, Knowledge Catalog, or Gemini Enterprise. These omissions are intentional to allow deployment on any infrastructure, including other clouds or on-premises, without requiring Google Cloud dependencies.
While some feature gaps exist today between Spanner Omni and fully managed Spanner, Google confirms an active roadmap to close them. Future updates will focus on parity, ensuring that self-managed deployments continue to align with the managed service’s capabilities over time.
